THANK GOD

Boy surgeon's parents in custody

The parents of a 15-year-old boy who allegedly performed a caesarean section at their family-run maternity hospital near Tiruchirapalli in Tamil Nadu recently, have been taken into custody, the police said.

Dr Murugesan and his wife Dr Gandhimathy were taken into custody Monday morning and detained at the Valanadu police station by Manapparai police as per District Collector Ashish Vachhani's orders, the sources said.

The RDO probe ordered into the Caesarean section, allegedly performed by the boy Dhileepan Raj, a standard X student, was over and the report submitted to the collector, official sources said.

On Sunday, the collector had said appropriate action would be taken after studying the report and consultations with both medical and legal experts and informal interactions with the investigation team. However, details of the report would not be disclosed to the media or the public and only the decision taken will be made known, he had said.

The incident came to light at last month's meeting of Manapparai unit of the Indian Medical Association, where Murugesan, a surgeon and Gandhimathy, a gynaecologist, are said to have screened the video of their son performing the surgery.

Dr Murugesan is now claiming that he performed the surgery while his son watched.

Coming down heavily on Dr Murugesan, the Tamil Nadu branch of the Indian Medical Association, which met in Tiruchirapalli on Sunday, adopted a resolution seeking disciplinary action against him.

Boy surgeon’ shocks medical fraternity

TRICHY: A 15-year-old boy has performed a Caesarean operation on a woman much to the shock and dismay of the medical fraternity here. A violation of medical ethics though, it was for the sake of setting a record, argued the boy’s father Murugesan, a doctor.

The boy, Dhileepan Raj, a standard ten student, had successfully performed the surgery under the watchful eyes of his doctor-parents — Dr Murugesan, an MS, and Dr Gandhimathy, a gynaecologist, of Mathi Surgical and Maternity Hospital, Manapparai.

According to sources, Dr Murugesan himself disclosed this information much to the shock of his colleagues during the IMA meeting held in Manapparai on May 6.

He also reportedly played a CD on the operation evoking strong criticism from the IMA members. When the other doctors present at the meeting questioned him, Dr Murugesan did not apologise, but argued why his son, a non-medico, should not perform an operation when a 10-year-old could drive a car for setting a record and a 15- year-old boy could become a docto r in the US.

Subsequently, the Manapparai branch of the IMA adopted a resolution against Dr Murugesan at an urgent meeting convened on May 11 and sent a report to the Central Committee of the IMA in Chennai demanding stern action against him. The IMA state unit also sought an explanation from Dr Murugesan. Not to be taken aback by the unexpected development, Dr Murugesan sent a reply stating that the surgery was performed by himself while his son ‘‘just watched it out of curiosity’’.

However, the IMA is not ready to buy his explanation. The members want stringent action against him. When asked about the action taken, IMA state president Dr N Mohandoss clarified that the state unit had already represented the matter to the Ethics Committee and called for an explanation from Dr Murugesan.

‘‘We strongly condemn the act. Murugesan has sent a reply stating that the surgery was performed by him only and his son was only a witness to it. As Murugesan himself had played a CD at the IMA meeting, we will send a report to the State Medical Council recommending to debar him. Only the council is the competent authority to take disciplinary action against erring doctors,’’ Dr Mohandoss told this website's newspaper. Dr Murugesan, however, was not available for comment.

Indian slum girl 'makes good'

Most of the high-paying jobs in India's $50bn information technology industry go to India's privileged elite. But, with the help of her husband, one woman has managed to earn her university degree as well as a job at on of India's top IT companies.
Rajesh Sundaram travelled to Visakhapatnam to meet her.Fatima lives with her husband in a slum area in the Indian town of Visakhapatnam. Her husband is illiterate, earning his money as a street food hawker. He makes about two dollars a day. Six years ago, when Fatima was only 15, her parents took her out of school and arranged her marriage, a story common to many other young girls in her neighbourhood.
Exclusive footage Watch Rajesh Sundaram's full report hereFatima had been a brilliant student and she thought her marriage to Shaikh Salary, her husband, would mean an end to her dreams of becoming an engineer."When I said I wanted to be an engineer, my parents and others just dismissed my dreams," Fatima told Al Jazeera. "They said a girl from the slums could never get become an engineer or work for the big technology companies."But, she says, Salary was different.Fatima said: "When I told him about my dreams, he was very encouraging.
He saved money from his meagre earnings to help me go to school and then to engineering college."Poverty and traditionPoverty and tradition still sees many girls in the slums drop out from school early The couple received little help for Fatima's studies initially. They went hungry to pay for her books and university fees and Fatima's mother was even asked by neighbours to dissuade her from studying.Rasia, Fatima's mother, told Al Jazeera: "The neighbours would say it is against our religion, they would ask me, 'Why you are allowing your daughter to go to school after she is married, what will you gain by that? Are you going to send your daughter out to work?'"Very few girls in Fatima's poor, mostly Muslim, neighbourhood are encouraged to study.
Poverty and tradition still sees many girl children in the slums drop out from school early. Most are married off and expected to raise children and do housework."They did not educate their daughters and so were opposed to my daughter going to school," Fatima's mother said. Eventually, a charity gave Salary and Fatima a soft loan to part finance her engineering degree and despite the odds, Fatima worked hard and earned her engineering degree with distinction.
SuccessSalary was please for his wife, and told Al Jazeera that it was their love for each other that had helped them achieve their goal."I am a poor illiterate man. I did not want her to be like me," Salary said. "Now that she has worked hard and achieved so much, people will look at us with respect."For the time being Fatima helps her husband at his kiosk in the evening, but soon she will begin a job at one of India's top information technology companies where she will earn $600 a month.
She will have to move away from the slums to another city for her new job.Salary will move with her.

KFC

KFC has been a part of our American traditions formany years. Many people, day in and day out, eat atKFC religiously. Do they really know what they areeating? During a recent study of KFC done at theUniversity of New Hampshire, they found some veryupsetting facts. First of all, has anybody noticed that just recently, the company has changed their name? Kentucky FriedChicken has become KFC. Does anybody know why? Wethought the real reason was because of the "FRIED"food issue. It's not. The reason why they call it KFCis because they can not use the word chicken anymore. Why? KFC does not use real chickens. They actually usegenetically manipulated organisms. These so called"chickens" are kept alive by tubes inserted into theirbodies to pump blood and nutrients throughout theirstructure. They have no beaks, no feathers, and nofeet. Their bone structure is dramatically shrunk toget more meat out of them. This is great for KFCbecause they do not have to pay so much for theirproduction costs. There is no more plucking of thefeathers or the removal of the beaks and feet. Thegovernment has told them to change all of their menusso they do not say chicken anywhere. If you lookclosely you will notice this. Listen to theircommercials, I guarantee you will ot see or hear theword chicken. I find this matter to be verydisturbing. I hope people will start to realize thisand let other people know. Please forward this messageto as many people as you can. Together we make KFCstart using real chicken again. Origins: Every fast food chain gets its own urbanlegend these days, from claims of worms in McDonald'shamburgers to roaches in Taco Bell tacos to snakes inBurger King's ball pits, we're determined to demonizecorporate purveyors of cheap, industrial foodproducts. It appears to be KFC's turn in the spotlightagain (their original legend about the fried rathaving become a bit long in the tooth), and they havebecome the proud owners of a legend intended toreflect another modern fear: genetically engineeredfood. Versions of this legend have been circulating forseveral years now, as indicated by the e-mail'sreference to Kentucky Fried Chicken's "recent" namechange, an event that occurred 1991. Earlier versionsof the tale featured six-legged chickens ("How do theytaste?" "Dunno; no one's ever been able to catch one")or birds so plumped by chemicals that their giganticbreasts made it impossible for them to keep theirbalance well enough to walk. It's easy to see why this legend has suddenly madesuch a strong resurgence. Our continual progress inunderstanding and manipulating the genetic codes ofplants and animals has fueled debate over theenvironmental and health concerns raised by thecreation and growth of transgenic food crops (which ischallenged by the National Academy of Sciences in a 14September 2001 article) and the marketing of foodproducts derived from animals that have been givenartificial hormones. Additionally, to those whoalready feel that our killing and eating other animalsis morally wrong, this legend highlights the completedisregard most humans hold for the rights of animalsand the increasingly inhumane conditions under whichfood animals are raised. "The government that'ssupposed to be looking out for our health and safetydoesn't really care about us" theme also makes anappearance here: a private company has supposedlycreated a genetically altered form of an animal thatis raised and eaten by the hundreds of millions everyyear, and all the government has done about thesituation is to require them to stop using the word'chicken' to describe this product? Nothing like the Frankensteinian laboratory scenariodescribed here is taking place, however. Raisingchickens that have been genetically modified so thatthey are born without beaks, feathers, or feet, orwith additional legs is still beyond the reach ofmodern science for the time being (although selectivebreeding has been used to enhance some features, suchas breast size), nor did the University of NewHampshire perform a "study of KFC." As well, theclaims about Kentucky Fried Chicken's name change areeasily belied: Links on KFC's web site (such as the About KFC page)clearly describe its product as "chicken" numeroustimes, something it could hardly get away with if thegovernment were prohibiting the company from usingthat word. And the KFC web site can also be reachedthrough the domain name kentuckyfriedchicke n.com. KFC no more raises its own chickens than McDonald'smaintains vast herds of beef cattle to turn intohamburgers or the International House of Pancakesfarms huge tracts of wheat to use in making pancakes. These companies are in the restaurant business, notthe agricultural or farming business, and they buytheir food products from the same suppliers aseveryone else. None of these chains could possiblyoperate the enormous facilities that would be requiredto supply themselves with all the raw food productsthey needed. KFC sells the equivalent of 736 millionchickens annually. It would have to own somemonstrously huge "chicken farms" in order to supplyitself with well over half a billion chickens everyyear. (As well, KFC is but one component of Yum!Brands, a corporation that also includes the Taco Belland Pizza Hut chains of restaurants. All of theseoutlets serve chicken and obtain their suppliesthrough the same sources, which would require Yum!Brands to operate an even more massively huge seriesof "mutant chicken" farms to keep its restaurantsfully supplied.)Kentucky Fried Chicken decided to change its name toKFC in 1991 for several reasons, none of which hadanything to do with governmental regulations aboutmutant animals: A move to de-emphasize "chicken" because KFC plannedto offer a varied menu that included other types offood. (The Boston Chicken corporation took the sameapproach for the same reason, changing their name ofits retail food outlets to Boston Market.) A desire to eliminate the word "fried," which hasnegative connotations to the increasinglyhealth-conscious consumer market. A recent trend towards the abbreviation of longcommercial titles, as demonstrated by other companies'employing shortened forms of their names, such as TheInternational House of Pancakes (IHOP) and HowardJohnson's (HoJo).How concerned we should be about geneticallyengineered food products is one thing, but no amountof concern or protest is going to "make KFC startusing real chicken again" — "real chicken" is whatthey've been using all along.
